(World Coolant Information)
Wayne Shorter’s “Prince of Darkness” opens chief David Lopato’s new disc on a brilliant be aware, and it is no shock that “For Chick” follows, nodding to Shorter’s frequent collaborator and fellow Miles Davis accompanist, Chick Corea. Pianist Lopato has a equally spherical, albeit extra inside, tone as fellow Hudson Valley wizard Armen Donelian. Even on the latter elegiac piece (a beautiful showcase for bassist Ratzo Harris), the Bearsville resident makes use of his instrument as a colour, portray the music with out dominating it. “Darkness” is a becoming introduction for the complete combo, highlighting, significantly, the pairing of horn males Ed Neumeister and Lucas Pino. Elsewhere, Lopato deftly handles compositional duties, whereas nonetheless giving the band loads of mild room to swing. “Nelson,” for instance, rides a beautiful wave, courtesy of drummer Michael Sarin and percussionists Rogerio Boccato and Keita Ogawa. “Papagayo,” with percussionist Bobby Sanabria, lets Lopato present his personal stuff over a spritely groove.
